Gowdy, who was the subject of the 2016 investigation into the 2016 Russian election interference, is a leading contender to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions, according to several sources close to the former lawmaker.
Sources said Gowdy has spoken to Trump about the nomination.
Gowdy is the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, and he has strong ties to the GOP, having been a longtime friend of Trump and a top aide to former Vice President Mike Pence.
Gowdys leadership on the panel has been a point of contention in the Trump administration, especially after Gowdy refused to allow members of the panel to interview former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.
The House Ethics Committee has also raised questions about Gowdy’s leadership.
Gowds handling of Flynn’s plea deal prompted him to recuse himself from the Russia investigation.
